Chimney Inspections: levels 1, 2, and 3, explained

A Level 1 inspection is appropriate during routine chimney sweeps and yearly inspections and includes examination of the "readily accessible" portions of the fireplace, chimney, and associated appliances.
A Level 2 inspection includes all "accessible" portions of the fireplace, chimney, and associated appliances, including from the roof and within attics and basements (if accessible). Video scanning of the inside of the chimney is required during a Level 2 inspection.
A Level 3 inspection is recommended when a Level 1 or 2 inspection suggests serious damage or hazards related to concealed areas of the chimney. As such it often requires removal or destruction of structures surrounding the chimney to allow for a thorough examination of the area(s) of concern.​
