Chimney Inspections: when level 1?

A Level 1 inspection is performed more routinely than Levels 2 and 3, as they're often included as part of a chimney sweep service as well as annual inspections. If your chimney and fireplace are working as expected and you are not planning any changes to the fuel source (wood-burning to gas, for example) or installation of a liner, a Level 1 inspection is appropriate.

Some of the activities the inspector will carry out during this level of inspection include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • perform a visual inspection of the fireplace and hearth, noting any accessories in poor condition or damaged, and ensuring that firebrick was used
  • confirm that damper is in working order and check for rust or warping in any metal components 
  • check firebox for any loose or missing mortar, noting any cracked or damaged firebrick
  • observe general condition of smoke chamber and look for extreme offsets or holes, check that liner is well-supported
  • if the chimney is swept from the top, the mason will observe the condition of the chimney crown, flashing, and cap
